5 Powerful Ways To Attract Your Perfect Clients At Events

If you’re serious about building your business, you probably spend a good deal of time, energy and money each year attending events.  (And if you’re just getting started, you’ve probably heard that events are one of the best places to find your first clients fast – and you’d be right.)

Question is, are you getting the most out of your “event investment”?

You might think that going to events is all about the content – after all, a “full emersion experience” is a great way to learn a new skill.  But the “real gold” of events is in the people you meet – but of course!  Use these tips to make the connections that build your business, both now and in the future…

1. Let everyone know you’re going. If you’re going to an event where your potential clients may also be, don’t keep it a secret.  Let people know via Facebook, Twitter, your blog and whatever other social networks you use… both before you go and while you’re there.  People will seek you out and/or recognize you – both are a good thing.

Bonus tip: check to see if there’s a hashtag for Twitter and use it with all of your Tweets. (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, don’t worry! ;) )

2. Grab the mic. I’ve never been one for the spotlight, so I used to go to events and just kind of sit there quietly in the background, soaking up the information.  (“I came for the content!” I’d tell myself.)  As a result, I missed out on countless opportunities and wasted a lot of money.  Don’t make my mistake!

Instead, decide to get in front of the audience and ask questions in a way that allows you to plant seeds about your business.  For example, “I teach spiritual solopreneurs how they can enroll 10 clients or more in 30 days or less, and I have a question about…”  You’ll be surprised and delighted at how quickly peeps in the audience will come to YOU to find out more about what you’re up to and how they can be a part of it.

Bonus: Make sure to practice your elevator pitch so you can speak your business without fumbling!  (Hint: don’t stress over this; just craft something and start using it.  You can always tweak as you go.)

3. Leave your business cards at home. No, I’m not nuts.  Here’s why: because you will always connect with the people you meet when you get THEIR card and follow up with them instead.

Granted, I do get strange looks sometimes when I mention that I’m a marketing coach, and oops – no business cards.  But I can honestly share that my distinct lack of cards has resulted in more clients and tens of thousands of dollars in in-come that I would have lost otherwise.

Follow up by sending an article or a website that they might find interesting, or just an email.  The takeaway is this: when you want to create connection that lasts, it’s far more important for YOU  to follow up, as opposed to waiting around for them to do it.

I’m officially on a roll, so here are two bonus tips for you…

Bonus Tip #1: Ask some different questions. Break out of the “so what do you do?” mold (we love to hate that one anyway, right?) by leading with a question other than “So what do you do?”   Instead, try these:

  • “What are you most passionate about?”
  • “So what’s your big a-ha moment so far?”
  • “What are you hoping to take away from today?”

One of my friends in the copywriting biz used to ask, “So what do you want most and how can I help you get it?”  That might be a little over-the-top for your style, but the beauty was, he would always ask it as casually as “Could you pass the salt?”  This allowed him to create connection and intimacy very quickly, as if it was the most natural thing in the world.

Think of questions that are authentic to you – that you would truly like to know the answers to of the people you meet.

Bonus Tip #2: If the event rocked, generously give a testimonial to the event host. Testimonials on someone else’s website are a huge opportunity for you to get exposure, create credibility and build your list.  You never know who will see you or find you from a heartfelt testimonial – even years down the line.  (Plus they’re a great opportunity to give back to the event host.)

Attending events are one of the best investments you can make in your business.  Make sure you’re getting the most– and giving the most – at your events and you’ll be amazed at how quickly your business grows.

What to do when you’ve tried everything!

One of the things I hear spiritual entrepreneurs say most often is, “But Elizabeth – I’ve tried that already and it didn’t work.”  (Or, “I’ve tried everything and nothing works!”)

Having “been there, done that,” I get that it’s soooo frustrating to pour your heart/soul/money/time into your stuff and NOT get the response you’re looking for.  But the very FIRST thing you need to do in that situation is take off the “victim hat” and, if I may borrow a phrase from Napoleon Hill – think accurately.

Fact: the core, key principles behind marketing and sales haven’t changed in literally thousands of years. (As one of my writing mentors likes to say, “Guys in togas were using these basic principles to earn fortunes selling chariots in ancient Rome.”)

If something isn’t working, it’s not because “it” – the process – doesn’t work.  It’s because there’s something not working in the way you’ve implemented it.  And that’s actually great news because… you have the power to change it.

The answer to “it doesn’t work” is… do something else.  (I know, I know – who wants to hear that?  But it’s the truth.)

I have no idea what that “something else” might look like for you, because every situation is different.  However, after years of experience and hundreds of clients and students at this point, I can – with 99.99% certainty – point you in the direction of your answer….

What are you resisting?

Or, put another way, what can you let go of?

Remember, when something isn’t working, you have two choices: you can stick with what’s not working, or… recognize that a change needs to be made, look honestly at whatever you’re resisting, and make a new, more empowering choice.   So you can quickly get to enjoy the blessing and momentum of forward movement instead of staying stuck and frustrated.

How To Make Potential Clients Fall In Love With You (And Hire You On The Spot!)

Many spirit-led entrepreneurs get a little wiggy about the potential client conversation because they’re afraid of coming off as manipulative, pushy or “sales-y.”

While one intention is to stay in integrity (after all, who wants to push or twist someone’s arm – ick),  much of the energy behind nerves around sales is that old fear of “what will they think?” This creates distance between you and your client, which can lead to them NOT feeling comfortable and ultimately, NOT hiring you.

The great news is, it’s actually quite simple to create the safe space that allows your client to fall in love with you instead… using your natural gifts and talents as a healer!  When you take the focus OFF yourself and your nerves and instead channel that energy into creating connection, your clients will feel it, and find themselves drawn to working with you.

Here are 3 specific ways to help  your client “feel the love” for you and your services in your next invitation conversation…

1. Listen. When was the last time someone really listened to you?  You know, as opposed to waiting for their turn to speak.  Be honest, now – nobody’s looking!  (Just for sake of the exercise, don’t count your coach or therapist, if you have either one. ;) )

Next question: how great does it feel to have someone you can trust focus 100% of their attention on you… to truly show up for you and be present as you share openly about a painful problem in your life… with zero agenda other than to truly be of service?  (You can see where I’m going with this.)

Very few people have that in their lives.  Your clients-to-be long for it.  What’s more, giving your clients the gift of your attention actually inspires them to want to give BACK to you.  (This is a principle of ethical persuasion known as reciprocity.)

2. Give lots of acknowledgement. After being heard, your clients want to be seen – seen for who they are, seen for what they have tried and failed, seen for what they have tried and accomplished, seen for what’s in their heart and what they inspire to do.

So notice.  Go deeper than a compliment.  My favorite way to give heartfelt acknowledgement is with the statement “I love…”. As in, “I love that you have so much passion for what you do.”

Giving your clients an acknowledgement from your heart is a true gift to them.  And just like you might still remember your 5th grade teacher for how she changed the way you feel about yourself, you never know when your words will change a client-to-be… yes, even in an invitation conversation.  (Hello, how yummy is this?)

3. Hold them as powerful. When your clients come to you with a painful problem that needs solving, you can bet that they are NOT feeling powerful.  Indeed, they’re probably feeling at least defeated, or maybe even like a victim.  In that moment, the greatest gift you can give to them is to take a strong stand for their personal power to change their lives.

Maybe they don’t see that they have access to that power right there and then.  So it’s up to YOU to be there to say, hey, you CAN do this… and I can help. This will usually mean not falling into their excuses or whatever disempowering story they have been telling themselves.

Remember, the invitation conversation marks a true turning point for your client. Most people need to endure a lot of discomfort before they take action to create something different.   By the time they reach out to you, they are well and truly fed up with whatever’s going on for them – even if it doesn’t seem that way to you.

Your best move?  To ditch the nerves and honor their moment of transformation by pro-actively creating the connection that allows them to fall in love with you… so they can finally say YES to themselves.
