Your habits are your destiny

A few weeks ago, I wrote an M+M piece on how your environment is your destiny. What you might not realize is that your environment is made up of many different facets or pieces.

There’s your external environment, including the things you surround yourself with and the people you associate with most. And then there’s your internal environment, which includes the words you say to yourself, the image you have of yourself and your habits.

What is a habit? When I looked up the word a moment ago, the definition I found was, “an acquired behavior pattern regularly followed until it has almost become involuntary.”

This wouldn’t be such a big deal except for the facts that:

  • The majority of our lives are made up of habits of one kind or another
  • Many of our most dominant habits don’t serve us

Our habits are so ingrained in us that we do them automatically. We act them out, over and over. The problem is, the habits we act out over and over are the ones that are keeping us broke, stuck, hiding out or playing small.

What if, instead, your habits supported your deepest goals and dreams? Like the writer who sits down to write 1000 words, every day without fail. She knows that it’s practically impossible for that habit to result in anything but a finished manuscript.

What if you created one of my favorite habits – that of tackling your highest payoff activities in the morning, before you check email or hop on Twitter or Facebook?

What if instead of the habit of shrinking back from those activities that make you feel uncomfortable – a.k.a. resistance – you retrained yourself so that the resistance meant “go faster!” (I’m working on this one!)

One thing I’ve noticed about successful people is that they all have great habits, and that many of them consciously created those habits so that their desired outcome was automatic. You can do the same.

What’s one new habit that would change everything for you? Think about it, decide, and get started on creating that awesome habit for yourself.

Bright blessings and massive success to you…
