The power of an “all or nothing” decision

by Elizabeth on March 4, 2010

Harry Houdini via wikimedia.orgI’ve always loved to study the inner workings in the lives and backgrounds of successful people. I love reading about the people I admire, and I’m always looking at their details of their lives while asking “How do they do it?”

(After rediscovering my dog-eared biographies of Harry Houdini, I realized that I was doing this long before I became an entrepreneur!)

Not so long ago, I got to thinking about that “How do they do it?” question a little differently. I took a look at all of the people I’ve been drawn to over the years. Was there a common denominator that predicted their success? What I discovered was very eye-opening.

I realized that every single one of them had made an “all or nothing” decision: to live their purpose, to achieve their goal, or to do whatever it took to have what they want.

Some of them had found their passion early in life and went for it, full out, no excuses. (I’ll admit that I’ve always been a little jealous of those who found their path and got on it from the very beginning.)

Others found themselves in a situation they just couldn’t tolerate any more and said “I’ll do whatever it takes.” (That includes yours truly!)

No matter what you want, the first step to getting it is always the same: make a decision. Not just any decision, but an all-or-nothing, do-whatever-it-takes decision.

An all-or-nothing decision pulls you forward, almost as if by magic. It’s not that you don’t have to do the work - of course you do! But here’s what happens…

When you make an all-or-nothing decision, you become perfectly aligned with your purpose. All conflict inside of you just melts away. And the Universe will respond by lining everything up to support your decision.

If you’re not manifesting the results you want in your business, undoubtedly there is an all-or-nothing decision that you need to make somewhere. And it might not be what you think.

My coach’s request to you is to take a look at where you may have resisted making an all-or-nothing decision, and ask yourself, “Why am I holding back on committing to this?” (Hint: chances are it’s because of someone else’s agenda.)

Then make the decision. Say, “I am doing/being/having this, no matter what, and I will NOT take no for an answer!!” (You’re also welcome to stomp your foot or bang an imaginary gavel or whatever else feels good to you. I like to say “So mote it be.” :) )

Done deal, right? Right! Bright blessings and massive success to you…

There’s probably nothing more frustrating than pouring your heart and soul into creating a program, putting it out there into the world and… nobody buys.  It’s like planning an incredible party and then nobody comes.  Not fresh!

The great news is, the reason why nobody’s buying usually comes down to one of just a few things.  Once you get a feel for what makes an offer fizzle or fly-off-the-shelves, you can design your programs and offerings to be irresistible.

Here are 4 questions to ask yourself the next time you’ve made a great offer and are still wondering, “Why won’t they buy?”

1. Is there a demand for what you’re offering?  (In other words, do they really want it?) I often hear my clients say they need to “drum up interest” in their latest product or program.  Straight up: drumming up interest is not only exhausting, it’s a losing battle.  It’s much, much easier to find a demand and fill it.

Now before you start groaning or pulling your hair out in frustration here… this is easier than you think!  I’m willing to bet a milkshake (my favorite wager) that at least one of your offerings provides an outcome that your clients already want.  What do they say they want solved, in their own words?  Which of your products or programs provides that outcome?

Your job is to position that offering so that it meets your clients where they are.  Which leads me to…

2. Are the benefits and outcomes stated clearly? We transformation pros loooove our process.  For example, I heart coaching.  However, nobody really pays me for coaching.  People invest with me to build their business, to create fabulous income for the work they’re meant to do, and to create freedom in their lives.

Your clients are not paying you for your process, either.  They want a very specific transformation… and they must value that transformation enough to invest in it.  When you show them that what you do will provide what they want, they’ll happily invest.

Bonus tip: One tool to powerfully communicate the value of your work is a Signature System.  Packaging your process into a step-by-step system positions you as the go-to expert and makes it easy for clients to “get” what you do.

3. Do you have payment plans to make it easy? One of my mentors loves to say, “Don’t make it hard for people to give you money!”

Payment plans are a great way to support your clients in saying yes to your offerings AND they help even out your cash flow.  Always offer a full pay option and at least one other payment plan.  (Important tip: make sure to structure your plan so that you’re NOT giving away a ton of service before your program is complete!)

4. How’s your energy? Whatever your doubts, fears and insecurities around your offerings are, they’ll be mirrored back to you in your clients - guaranteed.  So if you’re wondering, “Will they pay for that?” don’t be surprised when you attract a lot of people who can’t - or won’t - invest in your program.

Make sure you’re crystal-clear-certain on the value of what you’re offering first.  Also, remember that you don’t have the right to decide what people will or will not pay.  (This is a biggie!)

While there will always be people who truly can’t pay, 99% of the time “I can’t afford it” is an excuse.  When you’re certain that your deal is a no brainer, and you refuse to accept excuses, the clients you attract will match your energy with their energy… and their commitment and their money.

The Energy Of Money with Melanie Yost and Elizabeth Genco Purvis

MONDAY, MARCH 1 at 5pm EST

Register here: http://budurl.com/egpmelanie

  • Are you tired of worrying about money?
  • Do you get stressed every time you sit down to pay bills?
  • Do you feel like there’s a river of money flowing out of your bank account and only a trickle coming in?

Many healers and service-oriented business owners struggle with a love/hate relationship with money. Thing is, like everything else in creation, money is simply energy. Your thoughts about it and your relationship to it affect how money comes and goes from your life.

No matter what marketing strategies you use or programs you buy, if you don’t have a good relationship with money, then you will struggle to build a profitable business and receive the money you want and deserve. In this special one-time-only call, I’ll speak with Melanie Yost, business coach to heart-centered entrepreneurs, on how to heal your relationship with money so you can welcome the abundance that is waiting for you.

I met Melanie at a seminar about a year ago and was instantly impressed with her warm, centered presence and genuine wisdom.  I’m honored to introduce you to her in this special fr’e.e class.

You get what you model

by Elizabeth on February 18, 2010

One nugget of wisdom that kept coming up over and over again during the training I attended this past week is:

“You don’t get what you say. You get what you model.”

In other words, when you’re in a position of leadership (such as in client relationships), those looking to you as leader will receive (take in, internalize, try on, do) your walk, not your talk. Are you practicing what you preach?

One area that this shows up big time for transformative, healing pros is money. I’m going to lay it on the line, here: There are a lot of gifted healers who teach abundance, prosperity consciousness and Law Of Attraction, yet can’t (or won’t) get past the things that keep them from truly receiving abundance in their own lives. Unfortunately, that keeps both them AND their clients from experiencing the prosperity they truly want.

Does this mean that you have to be perfect? No way! You don’t have to get every “mess” in your life cleaned up before you start working your magic with clients. You don’t have to get everything right! And

I believe that you DO have to get into action and work on your stuff. Most importantly, you must make a decision to get that stuff handled. In the case of abundance and prosperity, that means no more tolerating old money wounds, undercharging, or living in lack.

Your life is a work of art in progress. Remember, the transformation comes as you take action, not before you do. (That’s a phrase I just love from one of my colleagues, Helen Graves.)

It takes a lot of courage to say yes and “do the work,” but when you do, your clients will see it, and start to step up for themselves. That’s when the magic happens and true transformation can become next-to-effortless. And that’s a beautiful thing. Bright blessings and massive success to you…

How Many Clients Do You Really Want?

by Elizabeth on February 17, 2010

Have you ever wished for more clients because you want to help more people and increase your in-come, AND at the same time, felt a little hesitation at the prospect?

Often I hear “spirit-and-soul-preneurs” say they want more clients.  But when it gets right down to it, they don’t really want as many clients as they think they do (or think they “should”).

The biggest fear?  Overwhelm. (Otherwise known as “too many clients, not enough time.”)  Sometimes they’re conscious of this fear, sometimes not.  Either way, they hold themselves back, and end up more frustrated than before.

The good news is, as a purpose-driven service-based business owner, you CAN design the business that supports you best. Here’s a simple 6-step formula to hit your target in-come while working with “just enough” clients.

1. Be honest with yourself. One of the very first articles on business I ever read was by James Wells, one of my favorite Tarot consultants.  (We both wrote for Llewellyn’s now-defunct almanac The Tarot Reader.)  James presented a formula:

Money you want to make = (Number of clients) x (Amount you charge)

It was the first time I’d heard the notion that I could decide how much money I wanted to make, instead of just taking what I thought I could make or what was offered.  My mind was blown!  (Funny how the simplest ideas are the most powerful, no?)

First things first: decide on your numbers. But beware: there’s little point in designing your business unless you’re really honest with yourself.  Don’t worry about what you think is “right” or what you think is possible.  Think about the numbers you really want, and WHY you really want them.

2. Drop the “shoulds.” Divide your desired in-come by the number of clients.  That’s how much you’ll have to charge each one. Simple!

Want to make six figures while only serving 10 clients one-on-one?  Sweet!  You can do that.   Trouble is, many spirited entrepreneurs see that number and hit a wall… because it’s a lot bigger than they’re used to.  And they feel really uncomfortable raising their fees.

You CAN raise your fees and stay in integrity. Remember, it’s all about the value you provide your clients.  Get clear on what they’re really getting out of working with you, and put a real dollar value to it.

If you find yourself saying “yeah but…”, ask yourself, “Yeah, but WHAT?” As your clients will undoubtedly have to do the work to get those results, it’s their responsibility to show up and get them.  Your responsibility is to provide the way and the support.  Both have real value to the client who takes the work seriously.  (Which are exactly the kind of clients you want, no?)

3. Think outside the one-on-one box. Classes, information products, programs, affiliate programs… the possibilities to be of service to your clients are endless!

Ask yourself: Can I leverage my time and work with more clients by designing a package or program?  This can help you create more in-come in your business while working less, and also provides help and solutions when raising your fees is too much of a stretch. (We all grow in stages!)

Creating a high-value program with a focus on results will also allow you to confidently increase your fees.  You can offer more to your clients when you work with them over longer periods of time, and charge accordingly.

4. Leave some wiggle room. When designing your business, your solutions will always be based on your current experience - i.e., what you already know.  Undoubtedly, there are solutions out there that you haven’t heard of yet.  Leaving a little “wiggle room” will invite the Universe to send a better idea your way and allow you the freedom to act on it without feeling overwhelmed.

For example, let’s say you decide you want to make $80k and work with 20 clients total.  You can see how to do it: Create a package or program for $4k and enroll 20 people.

It’s a good solution!  But there might be an even better way to reach your goal out there - an idea from a future session with your coach, a class you haven’t attended yet, a conversation with a friend, whatever.

So leave yourself a little room.  Instead of 20 clients, focus on the first 5 or 10.   This way, you’re in action and building momentum while leaving room for new and exciting possibilities.

5. Get into action as quickly as possible! What steps will you need to take to reach your goal?  Create your plan and begin implementing.

6. Course-correct with confidence. With entrepreneurial power comes the need for flexibility.  As you implement, you’ll make new discoveries (including, perhaps, a better way of reaching your goal, as mentioned in step 4).  Pay attention to what works for you and what doesn’t, and don’t be afraid to adapt to what you learn.

Are you hiding out in your business and life?

by Elizabeth on February 4, 2010

One of the things I’ve been talking about a lot lately is hiding out. It’s a topic that’s pretty near and dear to me because it’s something I battled for a very long time and I know that many, many purpose-driven entrepreneurs struggle with the exact same thing.

Making the decision to stop hiding out was truly one of the turning points of my life and business. If you’re not making the money that you want to make in your business or you’re not having the impact you want to have, it’s a decision you’ll have to make, too. (Yes, even if you think you’re not hiding out right now.)

Here are some of the common ways in which you might be hiding out…

  • You’re hiding out any time you don’t value your gifts (undercharging, giving away way too much for free)
  • You’re hiding out any time you downplay your success (dismiss your accomplishments or say “that’s no big deal”)
  • Any time you stay stuck churning in indecision instead of taking some action to move forward, even if it’s not “perfect” or you’re not sure what action to take
  • When you hang back from your tribe instead of connecting with them regularly (not sending your newsletter, not actively inviting peeps into your world)
  • When you worry about what other people will think (fretting or stewing over a choice you made or something you said, waiting for a reaction to make sure “everything’s okay”)
  • When you make excuses as to why you’re not building your business (”I don’t like selling” “I’m afraid of being fake” “I don’t have the time” “I don’t have the money”)

Coming out of hiding means more than just showing yourself. And here’s where I think it gets really scary for people. Coming out of hiding means being bold enough to claim, “This is what I want, it’s okay to want this, and I’m going for it.”

It takes a lot of courage to come out from behind the curtain and say, “This is who I am. This is what I am a stand for.” But the alternative is far too costly.

The great news is, your clients… and all of the people in your life who love you… they WANT to see you for who you are - the real you. And once you truly allow yourself to be seen and heard, you open yourself up to receive what you truly want in your business and life.

My coach’s request to you this week is a big one - it’s to make the decision to stop hiding out, once and for all. Or if you’ve already made that decision, to renew that commitment to yourself and the people in your world. Take one bold action in that direction… and don’t forget to celebrate! Bright blessings & massive success to you…

One of the biggest frustrations I hear from my peeps is, “Elizabeth, I’m so overwhelmed by all this marketing crap!”

And really, it’s no darn wonder, right?  There’s always more you “could” be doing (on top of the stuff you know you “should” be doing) which leads to feeling not good enough and guilty, which quickly leads do… doing nothing.  (Am I right or am I right?)

Trouble is, “doing nothing” quickly leads to a cash flow squeeze, not to mention letting your gifts go to waste.  Not good!

One thing I really value is simplicity.  And when you get to the bottom line, relationship-based authentic marketing is simple.  Here are the 4 steps you’ll need to master to keep your peeps AND your pocketbook happy…

Step 1: Become a beacon to your perfect clients. What do I mean by this?  Know what your perfect clients want, know how you can help them, and openly share that fact - all the time.

On the outside, you’ll need to have some basic things in place, such as a compelling marketing message, a website, a yummy fr.e.e offer and a database (i.e., mailing list).   On the inside, becoming a beacon is about owning and boldly claiming what you’re brilliant at (your gifts) and then saying “Here’s how I can help and here’s how your life will change when we work together.”

Step 2: Provide VALUE by creating and sharing great content. Bottom line: business is about helping others and providing massive value to your peeps.  Providing great content, both no-cost and paid, adds value and builds trust so that your clients start working with you and stay working with you.

One mistake that many soul-based business owners make is that they give waaaay too much away at the fr’e.e level.  Aim to have your fr’e.e. content help them get results AND maintain clear boundaries.  Your fr.e.e content should help them get an outcome while leaving plenty of room for them to continue further with you at an investment.

Step 3: Provide VALUE by giving your tribe your attention. One of the most fundamental human needs is to be seen and acknowledged.  To be truly seen is something your tribe is craving.  True connection with your tribe is among the best investments you can make in your business (and often costs nothing more than your time).

Your tribe wants your attention.  Communicate with them regularly and in your own voice.  Include them in 2-way conversations on Twitter, Facebook and your newsletter.

If you find yourself getting a little wiggy at sharing non-biz info about yourself, remember, YOU ultimately control the flow of information and  have the best judgment on how much is too much.  I’ve noticed that the “I don’t want to share too much” feeling reflects some resistance.  Push through it and trust yourself!

Step 4: Invite your clients to take the next step, regularly and OFTEN. Here’s where many heart-centered entrepreneurs let their fear of sales take over and leave clients unserved.  You must make regular invitations to your tribe to invest in themselves by working with you.

Remember, being in your tribe is a two-way street.  Sharing valuable content and giving your peeps  your attention will come back to you in the form of them giving you their attention when it’s time to make offers.  Many heart-centered entrepreneurs fail to realize that their peeps want to hear what they have to offer - they wouldn’t be in your tribe if they didn’t!

That’s it!  When you follow these 4 steps religiously, you’ll find that your cash flow issues begin to course-correct.  And you’ll be well on your way to creating a joyful 6-figure business you love.

Do you struggle with any of these 4 steps? In the upcoming 2010 Abundant Business Marketing + Manifestation Mastermind, we’ll cover each of these steps in detail AND you’ll take ACTION on creating your own marketing systems with the support of a loving community.  Reserve your seat in the circle here: http://www.marketinggoddess.com/manifest.html. (Be sure to register NOW for significant savings on your program investment - after February 7, the early-bird pricing disappears for good!)

Just wanted to be sure that YOU knew that the early bird investment for the Abundant Business Marketing & Manifestation Mastermind expires on FEBRUARY 7 at 11:59 p.m. (That’s this coming Sunday at midnight!)

I know you might be watching your budget, so I’ll even finance you with an generous, easy 8-month payment plan. (Note: this option also disappears on February 7.)

In a hurry? Here’s where you can reserve your seat in the circle right now:

http://www.marketinggoddess.com/manifest.html

So why is it SO important that you take advantage of the ONLY chance you’ll get in all of 2010 to participate in this transformative program?

Simple: It’s time for you to be doing the work you’re truly meant to do in the world AND receive generous abundance for it, without one bit of inner conflict or guilt. And that’s what this program is all about.

I’ve designed this program to give you 4 very specific results:

  • The marketing SYSTEMS you need to take your business to 6-figures
  • The business MODEL you need to take your business to an easy, graceful, FUN 6-figures (instead of burning out) and the strategies to get clients easily (without struggle, hard selling or convincing)
  • The Internet and social media SYSTEMS to build a loyal tribe & soulfully sell your services
  • The manifestation strategies you WANT and the money breakthroughs you NEED so you can receive the abundance you truly desire and deserve for the transformative work you do.

I’ve brought together all of the practical “outer game” pieces and the “inner game” of abundance in a step-by-step system to help you manifest joyful, 6-figure soul-based business you’ve dreamed about.

And it’s important to know that you’ll be putting the systems into ACTION, not just taking notes.  (That’s how you’ll manifest the results!)

Along the way, I’ll be there to guide you, coach you and hold you accountable to your dreams, your mission, and the clients everywhere who are just waiting to receive your wisdom and your help.

You’ll also be a part of a loving community of spirit-rich soul-preneurs just like you who are committed to taking their business to the next level.

Now doesn’t that sound like an amazing opportunity to get the personal mentoring, proven information and support that you want?

I think so!  And I want to make it VERY easy for you to say YES to this program if it’s calling to you.  That’s why I created the early investment point and payment plan.  But they’re ONLY available for just a few days more…

When I took a survey of the Marketing Goddess peeps at the end of last year, to find out what’s up for them and what they need, I discovered something really cool.  In answer to the question regarding top business goals for 2010, over half the peeps who responded said, “I want to finish my book!”

My good friend  Stephanie Gunning, is a top-notch publishing consultant with over 20 years of experience, including senior editorial positions at commercial publishers such as Bantam Doubleday-Dell and HarperCollins.  She has worked with an amazing roster of transformative authors, including Ernest Chu (author of Soul Currency, one of my new favorites), Hale Dwoskin (creator of The Sedona Method and featured in the Secret), Gregg Braden and many more.

Stephanie has agreed to give a special bonus teleclass, “Your Book Is Your Business Card” to members of The Abundant Business Marketing And Manifestation Mastermind.  She’ll share her secrets to getting more publicity, visibility, speaking engagements and clients by publishing a book.  She’ll also give us valuable tips on how to get the darn thing DONE.  (She is the Get Your Book Done Coach, after all!)
